چکیده

We investigate the evolution of a system composed of N non-interacting point particles of mass m in a container divided into two chambers by a movable adiabatic piston of mass M ≫ m. Using a two-time-scale perturbation approach in terms of the small parameter α = 2m/(M +m), we show that the evolution towards thermal equilibrium proceeds in two stages. The first stage is a fast, deterministic, adiabatic relaxation towards mechanical equilibrium. The second stage, which takes place at times O(M), is a slow fluctuation-driven, diathermic relaxation towards thermal equilibrium. A very simple equation is derived which shows that in the second stage, the position of the piston is given by XM (t) = L[1/2 − ξ(αt)] where the function ξ is independent of M . Numerical simulations support the assumptions underlying our analytical derivations and illustrate the large mass range in which the picture holds.

Buoyancy Term Evolution in the Multi Relaxation Time Model of Lattice Boltzmann Method with Variable Thermal Conductivity Using a Modified Set of Boundary Conditions

During the last few years, a number of numerical boundary condition schemes have been used to study various aspects of the no-slip wall condition using the lattice Boltzmann method. In this paper, a modified boundary condition method is employed to simulate the no-slip wall condition in the presence of the body force term near the wall. These conditions are based on the idea of the bounce-back ...

Non-linear Thermo-mechanical Bending Behavior of Thin and Moderately Thick Functionally Graded Sector Plates Using Dynamic Relaxation Method

In this study, nonlinear bending of solid and annular functionally graded (FG) sector plates subjected to transverse mechanical loading and thermal gradient along the thickness direction is investigated. Material properties are varied continuously along the plate thickness according to power-law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. According to von-Karman relation for large ...

Thermal Conduction in Systems out of Hydrostatic Equilibrium

We analyse the effects of thermal conduction in a relativistic fluid, just after its departure from hydrostatic equilibrium, on a time scale of the order of thermal relaxation time. It is obtained that the resulting evolution will critically depend on a parameter defined in terms of thermodynamic variables, which is constrained by causality requirements ∗On leave from Departamento de F́ısica, Fa...

Hydrodynamic fluctuations in a particle-continuum hybrid for complex fluids

A previously-developed hybrid particle-continuum method [J. B. Bell, A. Garcia and S. A. Williams, SIAM Multiscale Modeling and Simulation, 6:1256-1280, 2008] is generalized to dense fluids and two and three dimensional flows. The scheme couples an explicit fluctuating compressible Navier-Stokes solver with the Isotropic Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) particle method [A. Donev and A. L. G...

Evaluating the Effects of Ceramic Layer and Thermal Dam on Optimizing the Temperature Gradient of a Gasoline Engine Piston (TECHNICAL NOTE)

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effect of different methods for improving the temperature gradient of a specified gasoline engine piston. With a robust FE based software, 3D thermal analyses have been carried out for the piston model. Unlike previous studies, the effects of both fully and locally ceramic layers on the crown top surface were considered. It was found that a fully cer...
